Father William was a spice merchant. Nicholas, having no aptitude at all for a military life, was sent to become a scholar. Brother Adam inherited on their father's death and cut Nicholas off. Brother Hugh is a priest. Mother Cecily is alive; with Adam. 

Started Uni in 1213 at 18. Cut off in 1214. Completed 2 years of study. Was interested in civil and canon law, with a focus on mercantile law; picked up an interest in Common Law from Johannes.
