Background: A Plebeian of the most plebeian sort, Marcus is a citizen because he was born in Rome. He joined the legions as early as he could and could not imagine life without it. It’s what life is about for him. Unfortunately his personality has kept him in the ranks throughout. This is partly because he loves fighting (and does so at the drop of a helmet once he has had a drink) and also because he is not exactly the most disciplined or intelligent of soldiers. He is intensely loyal to Gaius, partly because he is Legion through and Gaius is his centurion and partly because Gaius is one of the few people who can match him in a fight. His friends in the legions have always looked out for him though because they know that, once in battle, his immense strength will shelter them. Still they always joke that “in the Legions there are three ways to do things; the civilian way, the proper way and the bear’s way – just one step behind.”
