Being a letter to Georgios of Bologna about a book in a strange script. From Alexios, Spring 1222: > To Doctor Georgios Herodontes of Bologna, His filii Alexios of the Schola Pythagoranis sends his affectionate respect. > I trust you are well. As I mentioned a while ago, I have been much engaged in a project of great interest and value which I look forward to sharing the fruits of soon. > *[a page of news and updates follows]* > While the copiers are working however, I was reminded of another puzzle that has baffled I and my compatriots. One of my sodales found a text in a language none of us recognise. The script appears to be Arabic in derivation but I am not convinced the language is Arabic and the script is not exactly right either. > I enclose a copy of the first page of the book and wondered if you recognised the script or language or whether any of our colleagues in the University did? Doctor Paolo Cellini came to mind as did Magister Benedetto Urbano but there are probably others as well who might be of assistance. > I remain, sir, your affectionate compatriot, student and friend, Alexios. -------- Being a reply from Georgios of Bologna about the book in a strange script. From Georgios, Spring 1222: > To Doctor Alexios Kaloethes of the Schola Pythagoranis, affectionate greetings and best wishes. > I have been keeping well and look forward with great anticipation to the revelation of the nature of your project and to perusing the fruits thereof. I myself have been engaged in some research of interest, more detail of which I include below. > *[half a page of news and updates follows]* > I found myself to be likewise baffled by your book; the script does seem to be similar to Arabic, but as you, I felt that that was not quite correct. I therefore consulted with some of my colleagues, and they assured me that the script is an ancient form of Arabic, though they, as you and I, were not able to comprehend the language used. They expressed some interest in knowing whence this material had been obtained. > Ever your affectionate friend and compatriot, Georgios.
