Trusty John

Once upon a time, there was an old king, who on his deathbed ordered his trusted servant, John, to never let his son enter a certain room, or to see the portrait of the princess that hung therein.

After the old king died, however, the new king would not listen, and forced his way into the room despite all John could do. He promptly fell in love with the princess, but did not know how to win her heart. John counseled him to prepare a ship with all manner of rich treasure, and they sailed to her country and persuaded the her to return with them.

As they travelled, John heard three ravens.

The first raven said that when they reached shore, a horse would come; if the king mounted it, it would dash him and the princess to pieces. Anyone who spoke of this, however, would have their legs turn to stone up to the knees.

The second raven said that the king would be killed by wine at the wedding feast if it were not thrown to the ground. Whoever said anything about this would turn to stone to his waist.

The third raven said that the princess would faint and die on her wedding day unless someone drew three drops of blood from her right breast, but whoever explained this would turn entirely to stone.

John slew the horse, knocked the king's wine to the ground, and then pricked the princess's breast, thus averting all of the evil fates. However, unaware of the reason for John's actions, the King condemned him to death for laying hands on the princess.

At the place of execution, John told the story of the ravens, turning to stone as promised as the tale unfolded.

The king and queen were blessed with twin sons. They were told that if they killed the boys and rubbed John's statue with their blood, he would come to life again. The king persuaded the queen to agree to this sacrifice. John was restored to flesh, and the king's sons were restored to life, apparently to reward his loyalty.

John, appalled that two innocents would have been killed to effect his cure, left the king's service, and has wandered ever since. He's a firm believer that two wrongs don't make a right, and he looks for those mistreated by the rich or powerful and tries to help them get justice.

After his return to flesh, John found that he could change his features and even his form. He made a point of learning how to turn into a raven, and has spent some time learning to fly, as he hopes one day to meet certain oracular ravens again and have a word.
