History
Johannes was born in 1240 in Bernice in north Germany as the first child of a member of the minor nobility. His father Wilhelm's dalliance with the siren Kallan then dwelling in the river Trave nearby produced an unexpected result: Johannes. Kallan was uninterested in the child, leaving him to be found on his father's doorstep one morning. His sister Agathe, born five years later to Wilhelm and his wife Cristina, still bore the marks of her father's affair.
Agathe showed signs that she might be Gifted from an early age; this was noticed by Otto of house Guernicus on his travels in the area. When Johannes' Gift awoke, there was some confusion about which of the children was responsible for the unusual events; after this was resolved, Otto arranged to take both of them to Oculus Septentrionalis with him, in the hopes that Agathe would also prove Gifted. Sadly, she did not, and her unusual upbringing and marked attractiveness would make rejoining mundane society difficult. Because of this, although Johannes' relationship with his father is slightly strained, he receives a stipend from him to care for his sister.
After his apprenticeship, Johannes traveled to Oxford to study for his BA, which he completed in 1216. When Edward decided to look for new juniors, the young Guernicus scholar was an obvious choice.
Goals
- Having soaked up the attitudes of his parens and other members of the Apfelgild, Johannes is motivated by a desire to improve relations between magi and mundanes.
- He is seeking a thorough understanding of mundane law in order to reduce friction between the mundane and magical worlds.
- He also strongly believes that education, of the Gifted and unGifted alike, will make the world a better place.
